TECHNOLOGY: Nicosia solar car race to go international

The organisers of the Nicosia solar car race, held last weekend, aim to include the event in international racing calendars, either Pan-European or in the Middle East.


In all, ten solar cars took part in the race, the sixth held so far by the Cyprus Institute www.cyi.ac.cy/ , with the participation in recent years of the Nicosia Municipality and the District Police office.
Hyperion 1, designed and built by students from the Avgorou Technical and Agricultural School, were the winners, having completed several loops of the circuit in downtown Nicosia.
Phivos, built by students from the Ayios Lazaros technical School won second, followed by Hyperiod 2, a second entry from another team of the Avgorou students.
Best design went to Junior, entered by AI Polykarpou & Son., with honourary prizes going to Solevo 4 of the Pascal Greek and English Schools, SunRacer 1, Club “RA” Limassol and First and Little Sunny, Odyssey with ClearSkies and Jasmine.
Sponsors of the race included pharmaceutical giant Medochemie, RCB Bank, KPMG, Alpha Bank, Ethniki Insurance, Hilton, NEMESIS/Cyfield, KAPODISTRIAS, SABBAI, Lanitis Bros, Segway, Landas, Love Island, SHIAHINI, GESOLAR and Unilever Cyprus. Supporters included the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, Nicosia General Hospital, Motorace and Moto attack.
