EUROPE: Cyprus has the highest proportion of cars that run on petrol

With 84% of all cars running on petrol, Cyprus had the EU’s largest share, ahead of Finland (74%) and Denmark (69%), according to Eurostat.


Over half of the cars in 13 out of 24 EU Member States for which data are available ran on petrol in 2017.

Diesel-driven cars exceeded the 50% threshold in France (68%), Lithuania (67%), Luxembourg (62%), Belgium (58%), Spain and Austria (both 57%), Latvia and Portugal (both 56%) as well as in Ireland (53%).

Use of alternative fuels, such as electricity, natural gas, biofuels and others, was highest was Poland (15%), Lithuania (9%), Italy and Latvia (both 8%).

When it came to alternative fuels, Cyprus was also down the bottom of the pile in the EU.
