DIPLOMACY: Trump says US partnership with Cyprus is stronger than ever

President Nicos Anastasiades has received a congratulatory message of strong support from US President Donald Trump to mark the 58th anniversary of the Independence of Cyprus.

The message underlines the growing improvement in relations between Nicosia and Washington which bodes well for future cooperation in the field’s energy, trade and regional security.

In his message President Trump: “The partnership between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus is stronger than ever and we look forward to maintaining close cooperation based on our shared values and interests. “

He added: “The continued strengthening of our bilateral ties will ensure the stability of the Eastern Mediterranean region and foster increased economic, security and energy development.

The United States remains firmly supportive of efforts to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation, and believes its achievement would bring peace and prosperity to all Cypriots.”

Cyprus celebrated its independence from British rule in 1960 on October 1.
